Before your first treatment, please arrive ten minutes early to fill out our health history form, where you can tell us about any medical conditions that may affect your massage. Try not to eat a large meal within two hours before or after your treatment. We recommend you don’t have a massage the day after a big night out, or drink alcohol after a treatment, as massage can increase the flow of toxins to the liver. For your treatment, we generally ask you to undress to your briefs – you will of course be draped with large towels at all times. If you aren’t comfortable with this please let us know and we can adjust the treatment accordingly. We can even provide fully clothed treatments if you wish. During the treatment please tell us if there is anything we can do to make it even more enjoyable for you, from using a lighter or firmer pressure through to adjusting the music or air conditioning. It is especially important to tell us if any techniques cause discomfort: we can feel muscle tension, but we can’t feel your pain or tenderness – only you can. If this is your first ever massage, or your first in a long time, we encourage you to enjoy a light to medium pressure. At Ambience we believe in gradually releasing muscle tension and helping the body to heal itself through regular massage over weeks and months. We can also ‘feel’ the pressure your muscles need. However, if you would like firmer pressure, feel free to ask. Deep tissue massage may result in muscle tenderness, particularly if you have tight muscles, adhesions or scar tissue from previous injuries. The tenderness usually lasts for one to three days, but in rare cases your body may need one to two weeks to recover. If you want to avoid this, please tell your therapist that you would prefer relaxation or sports recovery massage. Treatment times include consultation and dressing/undressing time as well as the actual massage – so a one-hour treatment equates to about 50 to 55 minutes of massage time. (If you want a longer massage time, ask us about booking a 1 ¼ hour or 1 ½ hour session.) Remember to drink plenty of water (at least an extra litre) after your massage to help flush out the wastes and toxins released during massage. After a massage, some people can experience symptoms such as headaches, nausea, slight dizziness and fatigue. Don’t be alarmed: these are signs that your body is getting rid of toxins and working its way towards optimal health. However, do let us know if you get any of these symptoms as we may be able to help to minimise or prevent them in the future by adjusting your treatment or suggesting dietary and lifestyle changes. We recommend scheduling some relaxation time after the massage: enjoy a hot bath, a comforting meal and an early night. You may need to tackle a busy day after your massage, but some wind-down time will help you make the most of the peaceful state you often experience after a massage. |
